Here’s a step-by-step guide for girls who want to become Air Force pilots in India.
- Know Your Options: Types of Pilots in IAF
The IAF offers three main types of flying branches:
- Fighter Pilot – high-speed jets, combat missions
- Transport Pilot – cargo aircrafts, logistics and supplies
- Helicopter Pilot – rescue operations, battlefield support
Women are eligible to apply in all three branches after qualifying the required exams and medical tests.
- Educational Qualifications
To become an Air Force pilot, you must:
- Be a citizen of India
- Have passed 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics
- Hold a graduate degree (any discipline) with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level
- Age: 19 to 24 years (relaxation for candidates with commercial pilot license)
- Entry Through AFCAT (Air Force Common Admission Test)
The most common route to become a pilot is through AFCAT, conducted twice a year. Women can apply under the Short Service Commission (SSC) in the flying branch.
AFCAT Highlights:
- Conducted by: Indian Air Force
- Paper Pattern: General Awareness, Verbal Ability, Reasoning, Military Aptitude
- SSB Interview: After clearing AFCAT, candidates go through a 5-day SSB (Services Selection Board) interview process.
- Medicals: Strict medical and physical fitness standards must be met.
- Training: Selected candidates undergo training at the Air Force Academy (AFA), Dundigal, for approximately one year.
- Entry Through NDA (Now Open for Women)
As of 2021, women can now appear for National Defence Academy (NDA) entrance exam. After clearing NDA and completing three years of military training, women can choose to join the Air Force flying branch.
- Age: 16.5 to 19.5 years
- 10+2 qualification with Physics and Math
- High physical and mental fitness required
- Other Routes
- NCC Special Entry: If you are part of the NCC Air Wing with a ‘C’ certificate and an A or B grade, you can apply directly for SSB interview without AFCAT.
- CDS (Combined Defence Services): This is another option for graduate women, although mainly focused on Army, the Air Force accepts candidates with Physics and Math at 10+2.
