Your first period can feel surprising or scary but don’t worry. It is a normal and healthy part of growing up. Every girl goes through it, and you are not alone.
At SheLit, we want you to understand your body without fear or shame.
What Is a Period?
A period is when a small amount of blood comes out of your body from your private part.
It happens because your body is growing and changing.
Most girls get their first period between 9 and 15 years.
How Will I Know It’s Coming?
Before your first period, you may notice:
- Breast growth
- Hair under arms and around the private area
- White stains in your underwear
- Mood changes
These are signs that your body is preparing. It’s a good idea to keep a sanitary pad in your bag.
What Will My First Period Be Like?
- Light or medium bleeding
- It may last 2 to 7 days
- You may feel mild stomach pain or tired
In the beginning, periods may not come every month. That is normal.
What Should I Use During My Period?
For beginners, sanitary pads are the easiest and safest option.
- Change your pad every 4–6 hours
- Keep yourself clean and dry
- Wash your hands before and after changing
Can I Go to School or Play?
Yes! You can do everything you normally do.
You can:
- Go to school
- Play

Periods do not make you weak.
