In a significant move to enhance public amenities for women, the Maharashtra Lokayukta, Justice (Retired) V. M. Kanade, has directed the demolition of outdated toilet facilities and the construction of modern, inclusive amenities at Mumbai’s Oval and Cross Maidans. This decision follows a suo motu cognizance taken in September 2024, prompted by reports highlighting the lack of adequate facilities deterring women, including sportswomen, from utilizing these public grounds.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has commenced work at Oval Maidan, with plans to extend similar developments to Azad and Cross Maidans.
The upgraded facilities will feature.
- Separate toilets for men and women, offering both Indian and Western-style options
- Accessible toilets for individuals with disabilities
- Sanitary napkin vending machines
- Bathing and changing rooms
- Locker and waiting rooms
- Coffee and ATM machines
Recognizing the broader issue of inadequate facilities for women across the city, the Lokayukta expanded the scope of the inquiry in October 2024. Consequently, the state government established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) in January 2025 to assess and recommend guidelines for women’s facilities statewide. The SIT, led by the Additional Chief Secretary of the General Administration Department, comprises senior officials from various departments, including Urban Development, Public Works, and Women and Child Development. The team has been tasked with submitting its recommendations within six months.
This initiative marks a pivotal step towards addressing gender disparities in public infrastructure, aiming to create a more inclusive environment for women in Mumbai and potentially setting a precedent for other regions
